OUR APPROACH

We believe responsible manufacturing is not a label added to a product after it has been designed.

It begins with the first question.

What is this made from?
Who makes it?
Where does it travel?
How long will it last?
Can it be repaired?
And what happens when a child is finished with it?

Good design considers the entire life of an object, and the many human and more-than-human lives connected to its making.

FIELD & FOREST

Open-Ended Woodland Play Set

A modular collection of wooden animals, trees, stones, and landscape pieces designed for imaginative, unscripted play.

Kindred Objects developed the product architecture, identified FSC-certified hardwood suppliers, reviewed paints and finishes for material safety, and worked with a small-scale manufacturing partner to reduce plastic packaging.

Materials: FSC-certified maple, water-based finish, recycled paper packaging
Focus: Open-ended play · Natural materials · Plastic reduction

LITTLE BUILDER

Junior Construction Kit

A 42-piece building system designed for children ages four and older, allowing structures, vehicles, creatures, and abstract forms to be assembled and rebuilt.

Our team redesigned an early plastic prototype using a combination of responsibly sourced wood and durable recycled polymer while simplifying the number of components required for manufacturing.

Materials: FSC-certified beech, recycled polymer, cotton storage bag
Focus: Product redesign · Material reduction · Longevity

TIDELINE

Ocean Discovery Collection

A tactile collection of marine animals created in collaboration with early-childhood educators to introduce children to tide-pool ecosystems.

The project included material sourcing, manufacturer review, packaging development, and a supplier code of conduct addressing wages, working hours, workplace safety, and subcontracting.

Materials: Natural rubber, mineral pigments, recycled board
Focus: Environmental education · Non-toxic materials · Supply-chain transparency

COMMON TABLE

Pretend Food & Market Set

A colorful collection of fruits, vegetables, breads, baskets, and market objects inspired by foods and markets around the world.

Instead of creating another disposable pretend-food set, we developed durable pieces intended for classrooms, libraries, childcare centers, and multi-child households.

Packaging includes simple stories about where foods grow and the people involved in bringing food from farms to tables.

Materials: Solid wood, food-safe finishes, organic cotton
Focus: Social learning · Durability · Inclusive design

MEND

Repairable Doll Collection

MEND began with a simple question: What would a toy look like if we expected a child to keep it for twenty years?

The resulting doll system uses replaceable clothing, repairable stitching, standardized components, and plastic-free packaging. Replacement parts and repair instructions allow families to mend rather than replace well-loved toys.

Manufacturing partners were selected using labor, workplace safety, wage, and traceability criteria alongside traditional considerations of cost and production capacity.

Materials: Organic cotton, recycled fill, embroidered details
Focus: Repairability · Fair labor · Circular design

ADDITIONAL IMAGE IF DESIRED
